Description
Coarse, green-flecked, and faintly smoky from the traditional drying fires, this loose-cut yerba mate looks more like a forest floor than a tin of tea, stems, leaf fragments, and fine dust all present, exactly as it should be. Steeped, it turns a deep olive green and carries a vegetal, slightly bitter cup closer to strong green tea than to anything herbal.
Yerba mate is the daily plant of the Rio de la Plata region, taken since long before European contact and still poured there today from a shared gourd and a single metal straw, passed hand to hand. It is prized in that tradition as a steady, all-day companion, a source of caffeine taken slowly and socially rather than alone at a desk.
This lot is grown in Misiones, in Argentina's northeast, under the light shade of native canopy trees rather than in open sun, a method local growers favor for a rounder, less astringent leaf. After harvest it is briefly flame-dried, the source of its faint smokiness, and aged for several months before milling, a step traditional producers hold to be essential to a smooth cup. Every batch is tested for purity before export.
For the traditional method, fill a gourd two-thirds with leaf, add cool water first to settle the dust, then top with hot but not boiling water and drink through a bombilla, refilling as it empties. Or simply steep a spoonful in a mug for four minutes. Bitter at first, and better for it.
