Hundred-Root Shatavari Powder

Ground to a pale ivory powder with a faint bitter-sweet, almost milky smell, Shatavari comes from the tuberous roots of Asparagus racemosus, a climbing, needle-leafed relative of the garden asparagus that grows wild across India's forests and foothills. The roots grow in dense clusters — the name shatavari is often translated as she who possesses a hundred roots, though older texts render it a hundred husbands, a wink at the plant's reputed vitality. In Ayurvedic practice Shatavari is classed as a rasayana, a rejuvenating tonic, and has long been valued for supporting hormonal balance, a calm nervous system, and general vitality, particularly for women across different life stages. It is traditionally simmered in milk or ghee before being taken, a preparation said to make the herb's qualities more readily absorbed by the body — a small ritual as much as a remedy. This powder is milled from roots grown in Madhya Pradesh and harvested at full maturity, when the tubers are thickest, then shade-dried to preserve their pale color rather than sun-bleached, which can toughen and darken the root. Each batch is tested for saponin content, the compound class most associated with the plant's traditional use, and screened for microbial contaminants before packing.
