Description

Actias luna, the luna moth — pale sea-green, with long trailing tails on the hindwings and a pair of moon-shaped eyespots that give it its name — spread flat and preserved under a sheet of glass in a slim wooden frame roughly fifteen centimetres across. In life the adult moth has no working mouth and lives only about a week, existing solely to mate before it dies; the specimens here are farm-raised for that natural short life and preserved only once it has run its course, never taken from the wild. Moths and moon-imagery have long traveled together across unrelated cultures, read variously as returning souls, messengers between the living and the dead, or simply omens tied to the hour they fly. The luna moth's pale color and nocturnal habit have made it a particular favorite of that reading in recent decades, though the association with moths generally is much older. Hang or shelve it away from direct sunlight, which will fade the wing's pale green to a dull tan over the years — indirect light keeps the color closer to how it looked freshly mounted. Sold as a curiosity — no medical or scientific claims are made, only a specimen preserved with care for how it was obtained.
