Description

Quarried, not synthesized: a matte white disc heavier in the hand than a vitamin tablet has any right to be, with the faint dry smell of chalk — which is, in fact, close kin to what it's made of. Calcium has always come from old, patient things: shell, bone, limestone laid down over millennia and only lately ground fine enough to swallow. Milk and bone broth, ground eggshell and oyster shell — cultures without laboratories still found their way to calcium long before anyone could name it, valuing it for strong bones and teeth in the way a bricklayer values good mortar. Vitamin D's original source was simpler still: skin, and the sun directly overhead, though northern winters and indoor living leave that supply thin for most of the year. Here calcium comes as the citrate, not the cheaper carbonate — a form the body can take up with or without strong stomach acid, which makes it kinder to older stomachs and empty ones alike. The D3 is drawn from lanolin, the wax that coats a sheep's fleece, chemically the nearest thing to what a sunlit patch of skin would produce on its own. Together the two are traditionally understood to support normal bone density and the structural mineralization that keeps a skeleton a skeleton. Two tablets with a meal that has some fat in it, since D3 needs fat to travel on. Take them in the evening, and think of it as laying down another quiet course of mortar.
