Labradorite Palm Stone — Aurora Veil

A palm-sized dome of labradorite from Madagascar, cut and hand-polished until it sits smooth and cool against the thumb. At rest it reads as an unremarkable grey-green, almost slate-like — until the angle catches the light and a sheet of electric blue and gold sweeps across the surface, gone again the instant the stone turns. The effect, called labradorescence, comes from thin layers within the feldspar interfering with light rather than from any dye or coating, and no two stones flash quite the same way. Ours is graded by hand, one specimen at a time, for the strength of that flash before it leaves the workshop. Inuit legend holds that the northern lights were once trapped in the rocks along the Labrador coast, struck loose by a warrior's spear, and that labradorite is the fragment of fire that stayed behind. Folklore elsewhere in the north carried the stone as a guard for the traveler and a stone of inward sight, kept close by those who read a great deal into weather and shadow. Turn it slowly in a window or by lamplight rather than under one fixed light — the stone is made to be handled, not shelved. Sold as a curiosity — no medical or scientific claims are made of it, only the geology of the flash itself.
