Description

Hawthorn berries ripen dark red through a thorned hedge that has marked field boundaries across Europe for a thousand years, small and tart, a plainer cousin to the rosehip. This cordial is pressed from those berries and rounded out with a touch of raw honey, syrupy enough to coat a spoon, the color of old garnet held up to the light. Herbalists across Europe have called hawthorn the heart's own friend for so long that the association has outlasted most of the botany that first prompted it. The berry, leaf, and flower together are traditionally used to support healthy heart function and steady circulation, especially as the years accumulate. These particular berries are hand-harvested after the first frost in the Carpathian foothills, when the cold is said to concentrate their character, then dried slowly and extracted in small batches. The finished cordial carries none of the raw bitterness of a fresh infusion — only a rounded, plummy tartness underneath the honey. Take a spoonful in warm water each morning, or stir it into tea. It suits anyone easing into middle age with half an eye on the years ahead, or anyone who simply likes a cordial that still tastes faintly of the hedgerow it came from.
