Description
Milled to a near-black powder, faintly reddish in strong light, He Shou Wu carries an earthy, slightly sweet smell not unlike molasses or dried fig. The root of Polygonum multiflorum, also called Fo-Ti, grows thick and knotted underground, sometimes twisting into a shape almost like a small figure — a resemblance old herb collectors took seriously enough to prize the strangest-shaped roots above all others.
The plant carries its own legend: a Tang-dynasty man named He, weakened and gray before his years, is said to have found a twisting vine-root in the mountains, eaten it daily, and lived to a great age with his dark hair restored — hence he shou wu, meaning roughly Mr. He's black hair. Long taken in Chinese herbalism as a tonic root for aging gracefully, it remains one of the most storied roots in the materia medica.
Raw He Shou Wu is traditionally processed before use — steamed repeatedly with black bean liquid over several days until the interior darkens from tan to near-black, a preparation called zhi he shou wu that mellows the root and is considered gentler for regular use. We source only the prepared root, never raw, and test each lot for heavy metals, a known concern with unprocessed stock from poorly regulated growers.
Stir half a teaspoon into warm water, tea, or a morning smoothie, ideally with some consistency behind it — this is a root associated with the long game, not the quick fix. Herbalists who keep it on the shelf tend to keep it there for years.
