Description

Coarse salt gone charcoal-dark fills this jar, each grain dusted gray-black rather than the familiar white, with a faint smoky smell that clings if you rub a pinch between your fingers. It has none of the delicacy of table salt — heavier, grittier, clearly meant for a shelf or a windowsill rather than a shaker. Salt darkened with ash or charcoal shows up independently across a wide range of folk-magic traditions, nearly always for the same purpose: laid at a threshold, it is said to bar ill will from crossing over, a line an unwelcome influence supposedly will not step across. This is a working salt rather than a culinary one — a different substance entirely from the volcanic black salt sold in spice shops, though the two are easy to confuse by name alone. Ours is blended in small batches from food-grade sea salt ground together with activated charcoal and a portion of hearth ash, mixed until the color is even throughout rather than streaky. The jar is hand-filled and finished with a cork lid, heavy enough in the hand to feel like more than its modest size suggests. Sprinkle a thin line across a doorstep or windowsill, or tuck a small pinch into the corners of a room that has felt unsettled lately. It is not food and should be kept well away from the kitchen shelf — its work is at the threshold, not the table.
