Description

Three small stones, iron-dark and heavier than their size has any right to suggest, make up this set — hematite is dense with iron oxide, and a piece the size of a coin can feel more like a piece of hardware than a mineral. The polish brings up a metallic, almost mirror-like sheen on the high points, while a scratch on the underside reveals the deep red-brown streak that gives the stone its name, from the Greek word for blood. Roman soldiers are said to have rubbed hematite across the skin before battle, drawing on its blood-red streak and old belief in the stone's power to calm fear and steady the body for what came next. Long before that, the same red form, ground to powder, was used as ochre pigment in some of the oldest paintings made by human hands. This set was cut from Brazilian hematite, a country now among the largest sources of the mineral worldwide, mined chiefly for industrial iron rather than for stones like these — these three were set aside and polished from material that would otherwise have gone to a furnace. Nothing here is treated or dyed; the color and shine are entirely the mineral's own. Keep one in each pocket on a day that feels unsteady, or set the three together at the base of a workspace as a kind of quiet ballast. Plain, heavy, and entirely without pretense.
