Devonian Trilobite Plate

A dark plate of Moroccan limestone, its surface interrupted by the curled, segmented body of a trilobite some four inches long. The compound eyes are still legible under a loupe, hundreds of tiny lenses arranged in their original crescent, and the thorax shows every rib of the original exoskeleton in relief. Heavier than its size suggests, with a cool, faintly gritty face and a matrix dark enough to read as slate. Trilobites were gathered long before they were understood. Ute tradition in the American West is said to have prized fossil trilobites as protective charms, drilled and strung on cord to be worn against harm — little stone insects that had already survived the end of more than one world. Old collectors called them simply bug stones, traded and kept without needing to name the animal. This specimen is Devonian, on the order of three hundred and ninety million years old, quarried from the dark shales near Alnif in Morocco's Anti-Atlas range, where family workshops still split the rock by hand and free the fossil beneath with needle and air-scribe rather than acid. No two plates split the same way, which is why this one was chosen and not the twenty beside it. Set flat on a desk or shelf, it asks only to be looked at now and again. A paperweight for anyone who likes to be reminded, mid-afternoon, that most of what has ever lived is already stone.
