Description

A hand-length wand of selenite, cut from gypsum quarried in Morocco and polished along its length until it takes on a translucent, moon-pale sheen. Held to the light, its fibrous internal structure catches in thin parallel lines, like a filament frozen mid-glow, and the stone itself is cool and surprisingly light for its size, warming quickly in a closed hand. It takes its name from Selene, the Greek moon goddess, for the pale glow the finished stone gives off under any strong light. Selenite is widely held in folklore to be self-cleansing, a stone that needs no clearing of its own and is instead used to clear and reset other stones laid near it. Some traditions describe passing it through a room the way one might open a window, sweeping stale air and stagnant feeling out ahead of it as it moves. Pass the wand slowly over a room or a person, tip leading, or simply lay it among a collection of other stones overnight to freshen the group. Selenite is soft, close to fingernail hardness, and will scratch easily and dissolve if left wet, so keep it dry and stored away from rougher stones that might mark its surface. Sold as a curiosity — no medical or scientific claims are made.
