Description

Held up to a lamp, the softgel glows the color of good honey, the oil inside thick enough to coat rather than run. Pierce one and the smell is faintly nutty, sunflower rather than the stronger wheat germ that used to be the standard source. Tocopherol takes its name from the Greek for 'to bear,' after researchers first isolated it while studying wheat germ oil in the 1920s. It has long been valued for its antioxidant role, helping protect the fatty membranes that surround every cell from ordinary oxidative wear, and it has a long-standing association with supple, resilient skin. This is the mixed-tocopherol form — d-alpha alongside its lesser-known siblings beta, gamma, and delta — rather than the single synthetic dl-alpha molecule sold more cheaply elsewhere, closer to how vitamin E actually occurs in nature and better retained by the body. It is cold-pressed from non-GMO sunflower, not soy, for anyone avoiding the latter, and processed at low heat to keep the full spectrum intact rather than isolating one fraction of it. One softgel with a meal that has some fat in it. Or do as households once did and keep one by the bathroom mirror, pierced and dabbed straight onto a dry cuticle or a rough elbow — a small, old-fashioned habit that predates the capsule itself.
