A pale, root-shaped tube of fused sand, rough and gritty on the outside, glassy and smooth as poured wax down the hollow of its center. This is fulgurite — sand struck by lightning and fused solid in less time than the bolt itself took to fade — and its branching shape traces the exact, unrepeatable path the current cut underground. Light for its size, and faintly warm-looking even though it has been cold for however many years it spent buried before someone found it.
Old belief held struck ground and struck wood to carry a charge that would not strike twice in the same place, a fragment kept afterward as a kind of ward, sympathetic magic in its plainest form, like guarding against like. Naturalists of the eighteenth century, encountering these strange glass roots for the first time, had no better explanation than folklore themselves, and simply called it petrified lightning.
The formation itself takes a fraction of a second: a strike can exceed eighteen hundred degrees, hot enough to melt silica sand into glass instantly along the branching channel the current follows toward ground. This piece was recovered from a wind-scoured dune field in the American Southwest, where fulgurites surface after storms and are gathered, never dug for, by collectors who know the sand well enough to notice what does not belong in it.
Set it upright in a dish of its own, or simply hold it — there is no correct way to display a frozen instant of weather. Only the fact of having one.
