Description

Ganoderma lucidum, the lacquered, kidney-shaped bracket fungus grown on oak logs by the Duanwood method that gives classical Chinese reishi its dense, woody character, dried and dual- extracted at a 10:1 ratio before milling into a fine, deep-brown powder. The taste is bitter and earthy, closer to cocoa nib than to any mushroom eaten as food, which is fitting since reishi has rarely been eaten so much as steeped and decocted. Called lingzhi in China, reishi has been documented in Chinese materia medica for roughly two thousand years, and the oldest surviving pharmacopeia, the Shennong Bencao Jing, ranks it above nearly every other herb in its catalog. It is traditionally taken to calm the spirit — what the old texts call shen — and to support deep, uninterrupted rest through the night, a reputation that long predates any modern study of the mushroom's chemistry. A half-teaspoon whisked into warm cacao or milk as the evening winds down, the bitterness softening considerably once mixed with either. It dissolves poorly in cold liquid and is better stirred briskly than left to settle on its own. Reishi is traditionally valued to support calm and rest; it is not a treatment for any diagnosed sleep disorder, and it does not replace medical advice for chronic insomnia.
