Quick-Light Charcoal Discs

Flat black discs a little larger than a coin, each stamped with a shallow dimple at the center to cradle whatever resin or herb is set on top. They look unremarkable in the roll — matte, faintly sooty to the touch — until a flame meets the edge and a thin line of sparks races across the surface with a sound like a lit fuse. Every culture that has burned resin on an open coal has needed some version of this: a small, portable fragment of fire, ready on demand rather than tended from a hearth. Temple censers and home altars alike have long depended on coal to turn solid incense into smoke, the disc itself asking for no reverence but doing the quiet work that makes every other ritual object usable. These are pressed from bamboo charcoal rather than the harsher wood-charcoal discs sold in bulk elsewhere, with a thin core of potassium nitrate that lets the spark travel evenly instead of guttering out halfway across. Ten discs come foil-wrapped in a roll, each about thirty-three millimeters wide — sized to sit comfortably inside most censers, shell dishes, and sand-filled bowls. Hold a lit match to the edge until sparks catch and spread, then set the disc in a heatproof dish filled with sand or ash. Wait a minute or two for the surface to gray over and glow evenly before adding resin — rushed coal scorches rather than releases a scent properly.
