Description
Wings spread to a full five inches, the blue so saturated it reads as light rather than pigment — because it is: the color comes from microscopic ridges on the scales bending light back at the eye, not from any dye in the wing itself. Turn the frame and the same wing goes matte brown, ringed with pale eyespots, the color vanishing at an angle the way a hologram does. Set behind UV-filtered glass in a plain dark frame, sized to hang alone on a stretch of wall.
Butterflies have stood for the soul in more traditions than can be easily counted — the Greek word psyche means both 'butterfly' and 'soul' in the same breath, and folk memory across Central America still gives the insect a psychopomp's job, carrying messages from those who have died, arriving uninvited but not unwelcome. A blue this vivid, moving through a garden, has never needed much help being taken as a sign.
This specimen was raised, not caught: farmed from egg to adult on a conservation farm in Costa Rica, one of a number of operations that breed morphos specifically for study and display while funding the rainforest habitat the species needs to survive in the wild. The mounting follows the traditional spread-and-pin method, wings set flat and symmetrical before the specimen is sealed away from dust and handling for good.
Hang it out of direct sun, where the blue will hold for decades rather than fade in a summer. A soul, or a wing, depending on which tradition you keep.
