Triquetra Knot Pendant

Three arcs, drawn without lifting the tool, interlace into a knot with no beginning and no visible end — the shape cut clean through a disc of pewter about an inch across, so the pattern is legible in silhouette as much as in the metal itself. The surface has a soft satin sheen rather than a polished shine, and the piece has enough heft to sit flat against a shirt without turning or catching. The triquetra appears throughout Insular art of the early medieval period, carved into stone crosses and inked into illuminated manuscripts including the Book of Kells, long before it carried any single fixed meaning. Christian communities later read the three arcs as the Trinity; other traditions have taken it to mean maiden, mother, and crone, or simply the number three itself — birth, life, death; earth, sea, sky. By old custom it has been worn as a sign of things that hold together without a seam. This casting is pulled from a hand-carved master mold kept by a small workshop that has made pewter charms the same way for three generations, alloying tin with a small measure of antimony and copper for strength rather than using pure tin, which bends too easily to hold its shape. It comes on a waxed cord long enough to knot at whatever length suits, no clasp required. A plain, sturdy thing for anyone who likes their symbols old and their answers unforced.
