The Petit Lenormand takes its name from Marie-Anne Lenormand, a Parisian card reader whose fame in the early nineteenth century turned card-based fortune-telling into a French parlor pastime, though the deck that bears her name emerged only after her death, drawing on older German card games. Folklore around Lenormand reading holds that the cards speak only in combination; a single card alone says little, and meaning arrives when two or three are read together as a short sentence.
