(Valerian has been described as the “essence of dirty socks” by some authorities!) It’s not an oil that one would chose for perfumery, but as an addition to a relaxing “go to sleep” blend, it is unexcelled. Some sources recommend it for use on irritated or couperose skin. However, it is an untested oil and could possibly be a sensitizing agent. Some sources recommend Valerian in a blend for muscle spasms, as well as Sweet Marjoram and Roman Chamomile. All three have relaxing and antispasmodic actions. Pet Owner Alert: Valerian is even better than catnip for your feline friends. Put a drop of Valerian Essential Oil on a cat toy and watch the fun!
