Seventy-eight cards, woodblock-bright and unshaded, printed in the flat reds, yellows, and blues that mark the true Marseille pattern. The Major Arcana carry their old titles in plain type along the border; the Minor Arcana show only pips, four wands, five cups, six swords, with no scenic illustration to lead the eye. The cardstock is matte and slightly toothy, built to be shuffled for years rather than admired once.

The Tarot de Marseille takes its name from the French port city where, by the seventeenth century, printers had standardized this woodblock style across dozens of workshops. Long before tarot became shorthand for fortune-telling parlors, these were ordinary playing cards. Folklore holds that the pip-only minors push a reader back onto intuition, since there is no painted scene to interpret on their behalf, and some readers consider this the more honest deck for that reason.

This edition is redrawn by hand from a nineteenth-century Marseille printing block set rather than photographically flattened, so the linework keeps its slight woodcut irregularity, a corner that does not quite close, a line that wavers under magnification. The two-piece box is unbleached card, stamped in a single color, holding a slim booklet of upright meanings only; reversals are left, deliberately, to the reader's own method.

Shuffle with both hands until the deck feels loose rather than stiff, then cut it into three piles before drawing. Well suited to a reader who wants to build a personal vocabulary for the pips rather than lean on borrowed artwork. A deck for people who like their symbols a little unfinished.
