A rough baton of black tourmaline, its long faces grooved with the deep vertical striations that mark true schorl rather than a dyed imitation. It is heavier than it looks for its size, cold against the palm at first touch, and black as a moonless field with only the faintest graphite sheen where a fracture catches the light. Each piece is natural and unpolished, chosen for weight and clean striation rather than uniform shape.

Folklore holds tourmaline to be a stone of protection, set at doors and windows to absorb ill intent before it can cross the threshold into the home. Miners once carried a piece against the ordinary malice of the earth underground, and the stone has kept its reputation as a guardian object long after the practice that gave it that name faded. Black tourmaline in particular is regarded as the most grounding of the tourmalines, heavy and plain rather than showy.

Set one at each entrance to the house, or on a windowsill facing the street, and leave it undisturbed rather than moving it from room to room. It asks for no cleansing ritual and no particular ceremony, only a fixed place to sit and keep watch.
